YES, Vanity Fair. Whoever was the producer behind this and got this shoot, aesthetic, and nostalgic production together, bravo and please continue. You’ve done well.
Agreed, it looks fantastic. Loved the background
yesss agreed!! amazing series ideas!!
I hate the set
Maximum effort, right? It looks great.
“Hollywood movies are reductionist and unhealthy” I love him
@Ashiro 15:22
@Ashiro Rewind to 'Don Jon'
When does he say that?
i really wish he would have touched on his time doing Inception or Dark Knight Rises. Would love to hear his take on working with Chris Nolan on two totally different kinds of movies
I also would've liked if he talked about Snowden personally I loved his performance and the film, same with Mysterious Skin and Manic. And he also would've talked about when he kissed Topher Grace in That 70s Show especially talking about his character and bts(behind the scenes). Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a lot of interesting stuff about his career but seems people only care about The Kardashians, Vinnie Hacker, Charlie D'amelio and other trash
Numerous interviews with better formats where he details those experiences.
Yeah I was hoping to hear him talk about how Paprika influenced the spinning room scene
I think those are the two movies he's talked about the most so that's why he skipped them. Also last year he did another video for vanity fair about his career.
Joseph is a honest talented underrated actor. Wish to see you in more movies.
@Queen B This hits harder after hearing that Andrew is going to retire for a while
No he's coming back, last year he had 3 movies out - he took a voluntary break to have kids - he said so himself
@Felipe Turriago he was popular (especially) in the 90s and 2000s and maybe early 2010s but I think Gen Z and the industry were focusing on other actors by now
He is underrated like we all took Andrew Garfield for granted.
@Felipe Turriago It was definitely voluntary, at one point he just started focusing on other things (like Hitrecord), and now it seems like he wants to focus on acting a bit more again.
He's such a good story teller. The way he briefly pauses in the middle of every sentence after putting emphasis on a key word really drives the point he is wanting to get across. It's really engaging
I wonder if this is him speaking naturally, or if he trained himself to speak this way, because it almost feels like he is acting
Nah. That’s how thoughtful people usually speak. That’s how my cousin who is a phenomenal educator speaks usually. I find myself speaking like this when I’m talking about something very important yet intimate, like if one of my friends is going through depression and we’re having an intimate conversation about stuff
He barely talks about himself, he has so much love for film and editing, and a part of me bets the whole setup was his idea (since he has/had that Rec company!) I loved this!!!!
he’s *NEVER* given mysterious skin to talk about 😭 it’s his best film and peformance imo, in my top 4 favorite movies ever. i love it so so much like
That movie traumatized me as a kid, I was way too young to watch it lol
I just watched manic the other day for the first time, great movie was hoping he'd talk about that one too!
Probably because it's too disturbing for other people
seriously tho they never include mysterious skin in these and every time i wait for it and then get dissappointed at the end of every interview
Right!? I always want more context on that film and hear the actors side of it. That movie is so great with great performances and a really dark story that often isn’t portrayed in film. I wish people would talk about it more.
Not only a great actor, but he is a great talker.
He is such a positive force
Amazing interview! I could listen to Joseph talking about movies for hours. You can tell when an actor is knowledgeable and not only knows his job well but also pays attention to what his colleagues on set are doing
He needs to do more of these!
Love how often he mentions that movie language often isn’t natural and “this is not how people talk.” I love movies and can suspend disbelief and enjoy them but sometimes it’s like … for real? No one would ever say that.
That's part of the magic trick: getting the audience not to question the implausibilities
JGL is one of my favorite actors. He's a gem. The expectations vs. reality scene gets me everytime I watch it.
The way he acts is so natural, I love it
Glad he views Don Jon highly. A lot of actors turn directors can't talk about their movie without talking about the disappointing box office. I think Don Jon would have been straight to Netflix today and discussed a lot more because it's such a good and articulate movie.
it is one of my favorite films i love it so much!
That’s cuz Joe wrote and directed Don Jon.
Don Jon is so good film!
I never thought about that, but you're right. It really does have a Netflix Original vibe.
It’s so weird to see him be older, in my head he’s always between 25-30 years old for some reason.
same!!!
The way he consistently weaves sensible life advice into interviews and bits like this without dripping cheese all over the floor, gives me the impression that he is a genuine person in the moment and not just self marketing. 🤔
Anyway, I liked Looper specifically because of his subtle impression of Bruce Willis - its the small things everybody knows about Bruce that he conveyed so well, it became the main attraction of the film for me. And the original was there too! 😮
I could guess why it wouldn't be the best film maybe to talk about in this setting but his performance in Mysterious Skin was amazing.
Yes!! I clicked this vid hoping he would cover Manic; my all time favorite performance of his. I hope he knows how special he is. 😭❤️
Yes My top JGL films:
Mysterious Skin
Brick
Manic
Snowden
The only film of his that really matters.
yes
Gut wrenching
I've always liked him. Smart guy. Really seems to live very intentionally. He's not on auto-pilot -- he thinks about what he's doing.
Brick blew my mind when it came out in 2005. I was ~24 and it just captivated me on every level.. Also, JGL is extremely talented and humble--we need more like him in Hollywood.
Still my top 10 favorite movies and rewatch regularly ;D the best update to noir genre I've ever seen
500 Days of Summer, what a truly magnificent film, and that scene that JGL talks about here is flawless.
@Olivia Bible and no. movies targeted for women is not worse, in fact they're good to relate
Best rom-com of all-time in my eyes.
@Olivia Bible based on that I wouldn’t trust their opinion. I totally agree with you. 500 Days of Summer is legitimately just a good movie. I remember a lot of men at the time even commenting how relatable it was. The film is also loosely based on the relationship between the Director of the film and and an old ex girlfriend.
@i hate straight males (except johnny depp) so movies targeted at women are objectively worse?
Eh it was a good movie, not a masterpiece, it's probably popular for the female audience. In my opinion Mysterious Skin, Brick, Manic and Snowden were definitely his Oscar worthy performances til this date
Can we have the extended version or a part two with the other movies he had VHS copies of.
Really hope so. How are they gonna skip those 3 fan-favorites but highlight Super Pumped?
This comment
!!!!!!
Watching his older face watch his younger face hits deep.
I love his commentary, you can tell he is passionate about what he does and has a great understanding of storytelling in film
I can watch and listen to Joseph ALL DAY! He's is one of the best actors alive. Love his eloquence and open minded visions. Also, WHAT A SWEETHEART!!!
I think that 500 Days Of Summer is one of the best movies ever made! It's A MASTERPIECE
@Marina G btw the movie is called Manic not Maniac, my apologies for the mistake
@i hate straight males (except johnny depp) I know the comment was a general one, but I've never been a fan and never used wattpad and I really think you should rewatch it if you think that it's poorly written... It's ok if you don't appreciate romantic comedy, but this is a good one, some scenes are iconic.
About the movies you've mentioned, I've seen them all exept Maniac and yeah, I like em
For a wattpad girl sure but for Oscar worthy films not really, I would recommend you to watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Mysterious Skin, Brick, Manic and Snowden
I love hearing his perspectives on movie making. The distinctions he made between a lot of Hollywood movies VS those you might see at Sundance were great, especially how many audiences need the actors to speak what they are feeling to capture the moment when that is simply not how a moment happens in real life.
Such a nice guy -especially how he keeps talking about how good the people he worked with are👍
Ahhh I always wondered how they got that reality vs expectations scene in 500 days of summer spot on. Love that he spoke about that.
Ah, it's so great seeing JGL; still handsome as ever 🥰. Talk about the huge nostalgia trip in this video! 🥺
You can tell that Joseph is the type of actor that LOVES, SPEAKS, BREATHES his craft. It's so refreshing to see an actor that is never bored of what he does
You know that he's a director when he talks about films
I’m tearing up watching him react to 500 days of summer, I remember being so obsessed with that movie when I was younger. It really takes me back ❤️❤️
i love that he talks not just about the character but also the stage craft of film. what an insightful human.
Very in-depth interview to Gordon-Levitt, he is very insightful on the filmmaking process as an experienced actor and filmmaker himself. Very eloquent and informative. Continue with this series.
This was great. JGL is very insightful and it's interesting to listen to him talk about scenes etc.! You can tell he loves the art of movies and has a lot of respect for his fellow actors, directors and other crew members. Great person!
I was so disappointed when AppleTV+ cancelled Mr. Corman. That was stupendously good television. And to see Debra Winger in action again was a treat. I’d never seen the torment of anxiety so honestly and artfully depicted. Thank you.
good i hate it
I can see why it was cancelled but it was a good series
It was beautifully made as well.. very artistic and so different. I was crushed to see it cancelled.
@Lynn Turman cancelled.
Was it cancelled or was it just a short series?
Watching these classic movies recently and then seeing this interview really makes me feel old! 😭
Hearing the sound of a VCR eject a movie makes me feel old! (Be Kind Rewind or pay the fee!)
I love himmm he has so many insights into everything he does and why it mattered to him
500 days of summer is a masterpiece,so is 10 things I hate about you.
They aight , the real masterpiece here is Looper though 😂
only reason im here haha
So much nostalgia watching this! I just wish he covered some of the others like Mysterious Skin, The Dark Knight Returns, 50/50, Inception
Maybe I'm wrong but i want to believe that he is a truly good person/he seems like one
jgl the one person i can listen to without feeling bored or skipping through the video. the way he explains stuff is just so intriguing i’m sure i could listen to him explain astrophysics and it would be just as interesting
500 Days of Summer is one of my favorite all-time movies - the kind that if you were on a desert island with a working DVD player and could only have 20 movies you would probably choose this one!
I've never known how JGL and ZD know each other but watching them singing "what are you doing New Year's Eve?" is one of my yearly rituals. Look it up on KRclip, it's fantastic!
They made a movie together 20 years ago and have close been friends since.
Just an incredible video, Joseph Gordon-Levitt really knows his stuff and it's great to just see an actor nerd out over film techniques and philosophy.
Enjoyed this to the fullest! Joseph's insights are always a treat! Great editing as well! Loved the nineties inspo! :)
You can really tell how much JGL loves movies the way he speaks about these scenes.
So sharp and well spoken. Very impressive.
he’s a genius. so intelligent. love how deep he went
Always loved JGL! He's such a kind and intelligent guy and has one of the most impressive filmographies in Hollywood.
Loved this interview! Joseph is a great actor, deserves more love and more good movies.
When he describes the authenticity of the moment when Willis calls him "boy" and proceeds to say "I deserved to be called that" he earned my respect. He recognized that only an actual real older man could convey that feeling in a believable way and he loved that things happened the way they did... he's a master of his craft. I can totally imagine my old man self talking to my young man self and doing the same, and my young man self truly would still be just a... boy.
great video!! I love JGL as an actor, he is so into his craft and incredibly underrated- but this was just so fun to watch because of the production and overall aesthetic compared to other "actors breaking down their characters/films while sitting in front of a white background".
I love how human this person is
I recently watched (500) Days Of Summer and it's one of my favorite movies of all time, and it wouldn't be as good without JGL in it. JGL was absolutely *perfect* for the role, I'd give my thanks to him for making the character who he was.
Loved this interview...so many little things about the art of movie making. You can tell he has a deep passion for film-making while also having a healthy attitude about the idealism of it.
Joseph is a great actor!
I never saw his TV show but watching him grow up in movies blows you away. A consummate professional even at that age!
Please do this with more actors - this was fantastic !!!
Brick was one of the first films I saw where I truly learned to appreciate a film rather than just enjoy it. My friend and I rented it when we were just out of high school and really shaped the way I enjoy media as a whole as an adult.
I am SO pleased at the continuity of that one piece of hair on his lapel. This is being shot on a set, but it feels less planned and full of reshoots, and more like a genuine conversation. Very enjoyable.
You absolutely *know* everyone who read this went back to look (including me!)😂
Don Jon is also great and it’s written and directed by him which is amazingly impressive
Underrated. Very poignant ending about maturity and love too.
Too short! We want more of his deep and enlightening knowledge on cinema !
Looper was such a cool movie, Joseph did such a good job in it
rgl is such a cinemaphile and a true intellectual. His series on Apple TV where he write, directs, edits and acts is really wonderful storytelling. I recommend watching it if you are a fan of his.
Love how he comments on the emotional/human side to movies instead of talking about his point of view. Beautiful, sounds like poetry to me.
He explains the processes of filmmaking so well, love that he gives credits to the auteurs/writers/dps/etc
wow , he's just amazing , would love to see more of him !!
he's a brilliant actor, so underrated. i love hearing him dissect these films
I will ALWAYS love 10 Things I Hate About You because of JGL (one of the reasons anyway). He was such a great young actor in that movie and to see him progress throughout these movies is just so amazing! He's come so far and has done such great movies! I wish they had done more of the movies that he's done, like Inception
Fantastic actor and a storyteller. I love Joe so much.
Great point about movies vs reality and that people do mix them up and they’re not representative of reality even though they can teach us lessons about our lives
500 days of Summer is one of those movies that’ll motivate you to change or stay in the same rut. That movie was PTSD for me 😂
Gosh, I love him! Joe is so extremely talented and soooo smart. I enjoyed his commentary here. Great guy.
Man, I am a big fan of Joseph. I really wished there would be much more movies with him. There is Keanu Reeves and then right there is Joseph Gordon-Levitt for me.
love this setup. he's done so many iconic roles & movies, they couldn't even get thru them all.
I love JGL since he was an alien :) He really seems like the most genuine nicest guy ever. Not just on Hollywood terms but in general.
I’d love to listen to him all my life talking about making films, life wisdom, movies aren’t real
Such a humble dude who genuinely loves his craft and art....
Very well put together and JGL is as interesting and articulate as ever. But I really hoped he’d talk about Inception too (the tape with it was on the table)
This reaaally is a good idea to put actors and actresses in front of some of their scenes and have them talk about it.
He’s so bloody likeable . Also one of my fave actors .
The most underrated and one of the most greatest actor of all time
His takes were so insightful to the craft that goes into each shot and idea and really respect that
I’d love to have heard him talk about Mysterious Skin. That movie is something else, especially for Gregg Araki. So powerful.
Love watching this!!! 500 Days of Summer is one of my favorite films!
One of my favorite actors, love this dude.
Wow did not know all back ground info. He's such a gem and you can tell he loves his craft. Great to see child hood stars be successful in film industry as adults
One of the actors that I enjoy watching no matter genre or budget rate he's playing in. IMO, he's such a good storyteller and performer.
At 17:44 the way he squeezed and laughed at the scene is so relatable, and I like it when he just throws many life-movie comments while watching himself on screen 😂
Such an amazing person. Wonderful storyteller and such a career , I don't get why he's flying low currently.
I loved The Lookout . It was one of the first movies I’d ever seen. He’s a great actor
Joseph at 1:58: this is one of those lines that was hard to do because it was completely unrealistic!
also Joseph at 12:15: *exists*
ahahahah BACKINTHEGAMEYEAH
i love him and many of his films are my favourite (especially 500 days of summer
Wow what a nice interview to watch! I think I could listen to him talk about movies for hours!!!
Ugh such a good actor, I could listen to him talking hours and hours
brick was one of my favourite JGL movies EVER i'm so glad he gets to talk about it!!!!
he’s adorable, and was even more adorable in “10 Things I Hate About You.” and i loved “Looper”
thank you so much for this video! Joseph is my fav actor ever and he deserves more and more attention
I don’t usually comment on these vanity fair videos with actors but this one was done spectacularly. Gained a new appreciation for jgl x
I loved 500 Days of Summer for so long not only because of the main actors in it, but also the scene they had him talk about. I thought that scene was amazing and so true to reality. I wish he talked more about that movie.
I love how he gives credit to where credit is due
I didn’t want this to end! He’s such a beautiful person🤍 thank you vanity fair!
love this! good job Vanity Fair and Joseph, he's such a talented guy. still wanna hear him talk about inception, 50/50, the dark knight rises though.
I love him. Really enjoyed this.
