You should do how Hans Zimmer Created Interstellar
6:30 I sincerely hope that a few years down the line and things don't turn out the way it has for several other famous people.
Yet, the remake itself was nothing short of utter garbage !
No thank you. I don´t want to be slapped.
Dude is responsible for giving more people chills than the cold.
@tech syndrome Or No Time for Caution or even stay (lower case one)
The "Cold" : crying man gif " am i a joke to you? "
*glares in anemic*
But no Hans and Ramin Djawadi are some of our generations finest composers.
@99Gara99 What rock did you hit your head on?
I’m not a fan, I end up always being disappointed in his stuff. I think he creates great sound scapes but mediocre music most of the time, haven’t seen this one yet so I can’t speak to this one
How incredible that we are living in Hans Zimmer era.
@Tomás Alarcón Chible Mario darianelli is good too. There are many good composers.
@C H I respect that but I would also encourage you to not discredit hans just because he doesn't resonate with you. For example Kendrick Lamar doesn't do it for me. I'm really not a big fan of hip hop. However I still regard him as one of the greatest artists of my time.
I never have stopped to think about this, but you're right. I think he's the best composer of our time, period. Glad to be here for it.
we're still living in john williams too!
It is certain!
“I’m Hans Zimmer and this is how _WE_ created the score for Dune”
In a few seconds he shows what kind of modesty and humility the mega-talent has. Gives credit to his staff and peers that helped him to develop this timeless and now iconic sound. Instant classic soundtrack
Yet he claims to have sound designed some of the elements?!
He got a very humble credit too. "Music By Hans Zimmer."
The man is slick. I can see his fakeness a mile off. A few here in the comments get it too, but most just think he seems nice. Live a few decades and you learn what is behind that vibe.
I love how we've come to praise normal behavior now
I did NOT expect that woman to do a perfect south indian konnakol like that!
And with an american accent 😃
ta doum
Did it hurt your pride?
SAME!!
True tht
When he began with 'how WE created' and the way he talks about all the artists...wow
made me respect him even more!
The astonishing thing about Hans Zimmer is that whenever you hear a score by him in a movie you're not like "ah, that's another score by Hans Zimmer" you are much more like "wow, that's an amazing score, let's look who did it. Ah of course, it's Hans Zimmer again. Who else!"
@Syphex lol he def isnt
Yup, every time.
Nailed it
Actually I have to just check the credits to see if I was right that it was another nondescript Zimmer score.
Dune's sounds and music are so cool because they have that 'uncanny valley' like feeling where something is familiar, but a little bit off at the same time. It's familiar enough that you understand the emotional response that the music is trying to convey, but there's like a perpetual feeling of dread and uneasiness to it too because it is so different. Visually and audibly Dune is just absolutely mind blowing. The only movie that I ever remember feeling that way about was interestingly Tron: Legacy which is funny because the two styles are polar opposites, but both are amazing visually and have the perfect music and sounds to accompany those visuals.
We can thank daft punk for tron
Absolutely hilarious that the bagpipe is actually Guthrie Govan on guitar. He doesn't learn other instruments, he's just so good at guitar that he can use it to play other instruments.
When they were saying it was a cello that made that earlier sound I though it was an electric guitar! Lol
Japanese Koto next on the list :D
(it's not that hard, just have to play the B, A, G, D, D# notes all over the fretboard and that's it, jk, can play only 1 note at a time, or maybe 2 when convenient, but that kind of music can even be 3 notes at a time often)
@Tom Veselý Oscar Isaac's entire vocal performance is actually Govan playing the guitar
Dude can imitate not only guitar players, he can imitate a siren, harmonica, harp, even voice and cartoon sounds, of course he can do bagpipe.
impossible not to admire Hans' way of percieving music and creative workspace.
"I want your cello to sound like a Tibetan war horn"
"I don't even know if there is a Tibetan war horn but she got the image"
That is a brilliance of an open mind of a great composer!
This man has been making music for decades and still everything he does feels fresh. Truly a master at his craft.
and welcome to my master class
@Malphas Mikaelson No, sure, if you reeeeeally get down to it, each soundtrack technically has different sounds. But there is zero personality in either of them.
@Martenfur Dune and Interstellar are not even remotely close in sound. Do you just genuinely have a bad ear for music/sound??
@defenestrated23 Zimmer is the embodiment of everything corporate.
🗯 Sometimes i wonder if Hans Zimmer makes a music THEN Hollywood makes a 🎥 for it.
Thats the power he has. A generational gift indeed 🥇 🏆 💯
@500 Million Strong Probably! It's also a common name, at least here in Germany.
@airotkiv not even sure why i wrote Zimmerman, probably auto correct. Thanks 🙏
His name is Zimmer, not Zimmerman 😉
@Rumen Kostov whatttt?? noway 🤯
Hans Zimmer is one of THOSE humans in our civilization. An Einstein, a Mozart, a Marcus Aurelius. He is a man that will be remembered until the end of our existence and possibly even beyond, because of what he has blessed us with. God bless Hans Zimmer.
John William better
TheTheOuters wtf does that have to do with anything???🤣 that was hundreds of years ago are you okay??
XDD wtf the guy makes pop songs for people who thinks that pop means love songs for young girls and drums are spiritual
@Rey Menders You relax
ONCE it’s revealed that he is responsible for the music and sound in general you just know it’s a gonna be a banger of a movie
Except he wasn’t responsible for any of the sound design
@fat dingo and Dark Phoenix but his music was still incredible in that movie
Except for man of steel and bvs, but yeah.
THIS. THIS IS SO FACTS.
6:27 his excitement when realizing he will be performing with one of his favorite vocalists is awesome.
Lmao he was just like F*CK YEAH 🤟
I love how unconventional and open to ideas Hans Zimmer is. He knows he wants a particular sound, but knowing he's asking a lot, he's open to working within the confounds of the results that are produced.
The best soundtrack ive ever heard and all sound design in that movie makes me wanna watch it on a loop daily....it is absolutely incredible
I just wish VF didn’t portray Zimmer as the sound designer of the movie
No it isn’t…just stop.
He's a genius and he's different because he's not just the composer, he also does sound design
@Daigo Aisabli he did the instrumentation on many legendary soundtracks. But you probably think John Williams is pop music too instead of one of the great talents in the world
@Daigo Aisabli lol, do you think people who you’re calling commoners are gonna take you seriously?
hes getting hired cause he makes pop music for commoners, for a pop movie with pop actors, if you dont really like and study music there you have a couple clues so you can take a look of what a pop musician is
@MCHENNEY see, why? He's getting hired for films cause he's good.
"play the flute, as if it was the wind whistling through desert dunes" Jesus Christ Mr.Zimmer
@Uncle Mart Wow bro... Jesus is God... Hans is a human being... sorry but I know him yes, I am Pedro Eustache, his winds soloist, and he is not God... Blessings to you!!
@Lia Hong english?
Habt ihr angst vor den Ausseridischen und denkt jesus hilft euch?
@Uncle Mart 🤣
I will never understand how people can say that Hans Zimmer’s music all sound the same. This man is one of the most versatile composers out there
This man did the lion king!!
*THE LION KING!!!!*
How anyone can call him generic and samey is beyond me.
Prior to dune, they do have the same theme and sounds.....
The only thing they have in common is that each and every one if them is an absolute masterpiece !
The Interstellar one still gives me chills
Buuuuwwwwaaaaaaaahhhhh
He's a very accomplished musician and score-maker. I truly admire the man and love many of his works. But the Dune score is not one of them.
I am proud of Loire for mastering the skill of singing Sanskrit gamakas (ornamented note) very well! It would have been wonderful if Hans would have acknowledged the skill of ancient Indian composers!
@George Ohm I think Taal is rhythm or tempo. Not sure
@Ash Would you just call it Taal singing? or I forget exactly what that whole technique is called when someone is learning tablas
She didn't sing gamakas and there's no such thing as "Sanskrit Gamakas" .
@Sara B Gomes - Exactly. Cultural appropriation much hmmm Hans
Same with Mongolian throat singing
Extremely enjoyable watch. Hans Zimmer is one of the greatest sound visionaries alive.
Nah.. not one of... He is the greatest.
07:08 this may be unusual to the west but here in India to convey a Rythm before it’s played on an instrument all Carnatic musicians sing this way, Drums Shivamani is a classic example, Hans is simply a genius and versatile composer
@AlexIncarnate911 odd that he never me mentioned Mongolian throat singing either
He might be a "genius" but he's a bit lacking on musical knowledge... That was instantly recognisable as Indian vocal melody tracking...
Absolutely. The notation of rhythm is called Konnakol and is hundreds of years old. Here is an example: krclip.com/video/TO29WUR5EXI/비디오.html
Foreal
This gentleman is one of a kind. Protect Hans Zimmer at all costs. A true genius. Respect.
"This is how WE created....." the sign of a great person it to acknowledge the support others give to get you to those heights.
noticed this too!
I came here to say this. The genius of Zimmer is revealed - he is a teammate and a leader. He gives credit. He creates fun and challenges his people. He has awe of his own creation.
a true leader
That’s the real leader
Very humble man, Instead of saying " How I create..." he said "How we create...". Respect.
7:07… 😳 that is one of the rhythms of indian classical dance 😃 most indian classical singers who accompany classical dance can do that! she did it wonderfully 💖
Absolutely love that he said "how WE created the soundtrack". He may be a visionary and incredibly talented, but he acknowledges all of the assistance he receives in carrying out these visions.
Hans: "We're supposed to be on a different planet, in a different culture"
Also Hans: "You know what this needs? *BAGPIPES*"
Was Denis Villeneuve Idea.
woman
whats ur problem
I mean, the different culture has some familiar instruments and rhythms and other unfamiliar ones
Well, house Atreides and Caladan are completely based on UK, so is acceptable.
Hans Zimmer just saying, “oh f*** yeah“ is probably the greatest approval you could ever get in music.
What I love the most about this is to see how excited the musicians are to be creating these scores. That more than anything, informs a lot about who Zimmer is as a person.
Seeing this soundtrack, the band and Loire live was absolutely mindblowing.
Genius of this man never cease to amaze me. You watch him describe how he made it. You think to yourself - yep that makes, perfectly logical. Then at the end I'm like - ok but how do you think of all of that in the first place? It's insane how these people can combine so many different sounds so well together.
with a voice like that his producer tag would be fire
WOAH, ZIMMY
You are now listening to Hans Zimmer Beats
zimmer zimmer make it boom 😩
@Mike L fr
"Oh no Zimmer made another one"
You gotta love Hans, also his Masterclass is excellent, highly recommended for musicians and non-musicians may also enjoy it. Very inspiring is the good news, but now I feel the urge to run my DAW's bagpipe instrument through my vocal synth then add reverb, a little delay, some distortion plus compression.... I'm also glad he didn't go pure synth and end up with something like the Tron soundtrack, not necessarily bad but I knew he could take it to another level. Not pure electronic, but not purely normal instruments either, where it's exciting is BOTH.
When I saw Dune, the thing that most impressed me was the score. I was even telling people that I felt the score far outshined the rest of the project, and should get the most credit for making the film as impactful as people found it to be. Very cool to see a bit of behind the scenes on how this was all made. The joy of collaboration really shines through here and is an inspiration to witness!
The costume design was probably a close second in my opinion
Extraordinary sound track. His capacity to imagine and invent is boundless. Really admirable. Inspiring. Thank you
The music is divine, raw, brutal and sensual. I love how Hans Zimmer pushes for the unknown and his team of musicians respond with passionate insight. Furthermore, Mr Zimmer lacks ego: he unconsciously shares the accolades with his band of musicians.
Absolute masterpiece. Takes the movie to another level
@King Robert what an L take 🤡
Which track blew you away? What am I missing?
@King Robert lol
@Title Wave neither do you. You think your comment is all clever and true to the point but you’re just trying to justify this score but deep down you know it’s just not that good
@King Robert to me it was amazing. One of the best sound tracks ever. Without it the movie wouldn’t be the same.
Dune's score was such a masterpiece, I can't wait to hear what the sequel has in store.
This is the definition of genius and creativity reaching way beyond all boarders. Truly inspiring!
Wow. Brilliant. Bravo to Hans and his team for an incredible musical score.
😑🙏
Everything he does is magic. Gladiator, the Dark Knight, Inception, Dunkirk, Dune. Even the bad movies like Dark Phoenix have amazing scores!
One of the most talented men alive! And his ability to find and cultivate and push these other amazing artists should not be overlooked!!
Yeah it’s almost as if he has dozens of talented musicians working for him in the background coming up with ideas.
A extraordinary man with a team composed of extraordinary artists....
Please God, don't let Hans Zimmer die, ever... we want him to live forever.
this is easily the best score in the history of films for me. I loved the Conan the barbarian one but after hearing dune it became my second best.
I love when everybody involved in the movie is fully committed and genuinely loves what they’re doing.
@Xavier Lignieres completely agree. "Dune" is a masterpiece in my opinion, or the Part One of a masterpiece
@LP.Skates Indeed and there are a LOT of people comparing Dune to LOTR a lot of things are very similar :
-Non US director that was initially known for indie/ niche films.
-Source material deemed impossible to adapt to screen.
-Studio somehow green lighting/financing a very risky project.
-Passionate team that are doing this for the love of cinema and art.
-Director that considers the project to be the achievement of a life long dream.
-An entire team that thinks outside the box together.
Dune part 2 will clean the floor at the 2024 Oscars like Return of the King interesting that Dune Part2 is scheduled to release almost exactly 20 years after ROTK.
This comment section has me dying
@LP.Skates lotr is not the "only" other franchise to do that
Herald of the Change is absolutely breathtaking. I read the book while listening to the soundtrack. It felt I was gone travelling to another world or dimension.
I saw Dune in theaters and the sound effects/music blew my mind. My seat shook, I’ve absolutely never experienced something like this in my life. I left speechless!!!
All those different scores are just incredible. I already loved Dune story, what Villeneuve did is a masterpiece, but what makes me watch it over and over is Zimmer's epic music moments. Those "not bagpipes" when they defend base or that heavy female voice... chilling.
awesome interview - to see his passion for the music and he obviously had fun with it. Very inspiring just to see these masters and their passion for making sound. I really enjoyed this.
I love how he says "This is how 'we' created the score for DUNE" instead of 'i'
Edit: 3k likes wtf!?!?
@xeon0100 You go that totally wrong, he's a team player and always involves others and gives them credit
@jolie It's about all they say.
. word - he explained th visions well ^
his ghostwriters say hi
@xeon0100 lmao what did Hans ever do to you?
Loire's voice is really incredible. I've never heard anyone who sounds like that. Also Hanz is a genius who has literally never missed.
No wonder why they win an oscar. Such a unique way to make music and capture the essence of Dune
I just finally watched th movie lastnight and it is incredible. I have been listening to the soundtrack the past couple of days, the music is something else, incredible. Also it is cool how after all of these years he still talks about the gladiator soundtrack.
Amazing extraordinary very soul full, cinematic
When the horns go all out while the atreides are leaving the caladan its just amazing
I got goosebumps
I watched this film like at least 10 times one of the reasons to do so was
The extraordinary music
It's truly a art, it's communication with sound
Even at this stage of this career, he almost has this childlike excitement and curiosity. So eager to share his process and thoughts. Absolute genius.
Because he never stops learning and exploring new things
Absolutely. You know these things bro.
What a Master!!! God bless you Master Hans Zimmer
I enjoyed the score for Dune, and I think he definitely succeeded in making a different and alien-feeling world, but I do think that a little more restraint, and a little more melody, would have served the film better.
Funnily enough, though Zimmer is known for electronic and more experimental sounds, when he does choose to write in the classic, romantic Korngold style with a lush and melodic orchestra, he's one of the best. The score for Pirates 3 is astonishingly good. I wouldn't want that score for Dune, but a few more moments of melody, and a little less using the score as sound effects, would have been nice.
I adore zimmer and love the soundtrack for dune. I’m happy he got the Oscar. However I will never tire of hearing a full orchestra.
Man the Soundtrack was absolutely breathtaking in this. Really made the movie - it was perfection to match the epic grandeur of the visuals and weight of the story. Chills all the way through man, absolute chills. I was on cloud 9 watching this. It really felt like a true cinematic experience
This was _INCREDIBLY_ fascinating, and Guthrie Govan is a monstrous player.
“My guitarist Guthrie Govan” I’m like WHAT Guthrie is in on this and is just casually mentioned as any guitarist. Amazing!
guitarists have obsessed over Guthrie for years now, love to see him getting more broad recognition!
When I heard that Guthrie worked with Hans Zimmer I knew the result would be incredible
@jokerman261 at which part does he mention him?
EDIT: found the part, lol
frr lol. I did a double take
"¿Por qué todas las películas de ciencia ficción tienen bandas sonoras europeas románticas?"
Por eso me parece el mejor compositor de esta generación: sus obras son todas conceptuales en el sentido de que entiende algo que la mayoría de compositores mainstream no; cada película/historia tiene o debería tener un carácter CULTURAL único y distintivo que no solo debe reflejar la fotografía, o los personajes... también la sonoridad. Que crack.
An incredible composer who's incredibly humble. This man is great.
It's absolutely incredible just how creative they are in creating this soundtrack, literally inventing new instruments to create new sounds that sound familiar but also incredibly different
Many writers love the idea of having their books turned into films... Not me though. I'd love to have my series turned into a film... Just so Hans Zimmer could write its soundtrack.
If this soundtrack does not win him the first Oscar after Lion King (1994) then I don't know what will! All the new and innovative stuff they did for this movie and it's music is sensational! This movie has a soundtrack so unique that it has to be awarded!
This definitely aged well! Or they read our comments and finally realized Zimmer needs his new Oscar! Now we can be happy! He sure was when thanking everybody on Twitter! :D
This aged well
@Zeek he won!
Congrats. He won.
This aged well.
All props are going to Hans and his team of course, as it should. But I really wanted to give a big shoutout to the VF team for putting up an incredible video essay, thank you so much for this content!
I love how he always looks at his musicians and seems like "Those guys are awesome."
Thanks for sharing this with us! I didn't know anything about Dune when I watched it so it was the music that made me love it so much (I have yet to read the series 🤧). Loire is freaking amazing!
Loved, loved, LOVED the sounds of this movie. Merci beaucoup Denis and the entire sound team!
Dune was truly a new, fresh take on OST. My breath was taken away by each song. Hans is a talent that we will only get once in everyone’s life time.
Such a huge reason why this movie was so excellent. Thank you Zimmer Team!
I really respect the works of Hans Zimmer....really impressive and inspiring
I freaking loved this movie. Made me wish I got introduced to the Dune novels much sooner. A big part of my love for the film was the music on top of the large scale of sceneries.
As an Indian i find it quite intriguing that Zimmer mentions this subconscious portrayal of familiar/unfamiliar places using soundtrack, I never actively noticed this previously but now that I think about it Aliens, Jurassic Park, Star Trek, 2001, etc. Movies feel alien to me cause all the musical queues are European/American in nature, while Dune feels very natural and real to me cause a lot of the musical cues are found in Indian classical music, I had never thought about it that way before but now it makes sense.
It's funny, because it seems like Zimmer wanted to create a non-European alien experience, but because of this it will only sound alien to European music-accustomed ears. Nonetheless, an amazing score & film.
Thats awesome
Yes.. and at the ending in this clip, instrument played is "Shehnai?"
@Ally you said it
When I watch a movie and this brilliant music starts playing I know right away this must be Hanz Zimmer , what a talented gifted composer
I love how these are physical instruments, ancient instruments, invented instruments (including the PVC!) and not just bashed out on an electronic deck. Wonderful.
ademas de admiración me transmiten un sentimiento tan profundo y estoy muy agradecida por ello, GRACIAS
its very enlightening listening to him talk about this, its really like hes making his own music/sound-only version of the movie hes composing for, treating his players like actors giving a performance.
When I watched Dune, I was blown away not by the script or acting of the movie, but of the cinematography and the soundtrack. How it just created this entirely ethereal world and it blew my mind. I watched it in a imax movie theater, and I get chills remembering the feeling of the sounds portraying what I was seeing almost to perfection.
@paulo what on earth are you even saying 🤣🤣🤣
What book 'edition' lmao
@Julius FJ care to recommend me a better sci fi movie this year? Or the year before?
@DawsJosh any better sci fi movies this year tho
@Adam Sirin whats the `spirit of the novels? 'If u rly knew what it was u would not even be here talking
@Adam Sirin do u think i did not read the novels? Lmao i bet my books editions are better
The Dune soundtrack is a total masterpiece!
Hans Zimmer is truly the greatest!
I just watched this movie the other day. Visually, musically, and emtionally well done, i hadnt read the book so I had no idea what to really expect plotwise. I really enjoyed not having my hand held during the establishment of the worldbuilding and characterization of the cast. However, i did feel extremely drained after the runtime, maybe because i wasnt used to sitting at a film for so long since its been a while since theaters have been running lol. Sick movie
the sound design was actually one of my favorite part of this film. sounds amazing on my sonos surround system
Zimmer is as humble as he is talented. "We created" speaks volumes. Also the fact he makes so many instruments and help musicians play notes they never knew was possible also shows what an eccentric composer he is. I used to be in the "All Zimmer stuff sounds the same" but who would have known the sheer amount of ingenuity and skill it involved to play wind. haha
@Nej Tack Plenty of people would say I/me whether it is true or not. People like to take credit. Just stating it was very self aware for him to make it an emphasis. I definitely agree with you.
@Nej Tack was looking for this comment lol. Ghost writing should be illegal
He has a big team
I mean, the team of writers and composers at his company definitely worked on this, as they do on anything Hans Zimmer is hired to compose for. So it is both humble and necessary for him to say "we".
The music is written by interns and employees, saying "I" would be borderline fradulent
OM …. G this people knows music, they breath music. Love the way they enjoy discussing their art and how each one of them provided a bit of their sound and soul to this soundtrack. My respects to all of them !
HIS MUSICAL SCORE IS INCREDIBLE!
history will remember this man's genius
Wow, who knew "audio engineering" and music could be so cool? I need to go watch/listen to the movie again!!
It's only possible to produce what he does when he's obviously so appreciative of the musicians who set the foundation of what he then orchestrates. Like a conductor who forms chemistry with every piece, brilliant
such a deserved oscar. soundtrack for dune not only was incredibly unique and elevates the peculiarities of this epic sci-fi, but was exceptional
Every single person involved in the soundtrack is amazing! Not even mad he picked this over Tenet!
DUNE showed me once again that Hans Zimmer is a power of unlimited potential.
This soundtrack convinced me to take up throat singing again, and learn the duduk. I also bought an erhu while I was at it, but it's a pretty hard instrument.
the man is just having the time of his life, putting millions through a roller coaster of emotions with every single movie he composes
Wish he can live forever. Such a genius.
Wow amazing, this man is seriously gifted it's like he is making a painting out of sounds, credit also to the very many talented people that he is able to bring together to create something so magical.
